Springsteen has always been there, and he’s a part of us without us even realising it. You hear ‘Born to Run’ a million times, and you grow up with ‘Born in the USA’, but it wasn’t until I was 24 that I actually realised how great he was. I listened to him after a reviewer called our first EP ‘too Springsteen’ and I thought, ‘What?’ So I checked him out and I’m not sorry I did that at all. The lines in ‘Streets of Philadelphia’ are amazing: ‘no angel’s gonna greet me’ and ‘my clothes don’t fit anymore’ describe a man dying of Aids so brilliantly. Nobody else can write lyrics like that and it takes my breath away.

At times I feel that I may be a very cold and unemotional person and at times I wish I wasn’t so mentally vulnerable. I do tend to stand on the outside sometimes.

"I suppose whenever you go through periods of transition, or in a way, it’s a very definite closing of a certain chapter of your life - I suppose those times are always going to be both very upsetting and also very exciting by the very nature because things are changing and you don’t know what’s going to happen."

The world is made up of more than your sadness. Everybody goes through hardship and it only takes a day for something to change.
